The absolute speed of hockey can sometimes make it difficult to pinpoint the top players in the NHL but when those players warm up and start scoring points at will, or cool and get hauled off the scoresheet, they affect the game at a really concrete way and that in turn impacts bettors and their profits.
In the last few weeks, there have been more than a few examples of this and I’ve recognized a list of players whose hot or cold streaks happen to be leading to good, bad or awful results for their respective teams.
Johnny HockeyJohnny Gaudreau had a tough start to his season and has been forced to miss half of October with a broken finger but that is all behind him now. The 5’9″ left-winger now has nine points in his past seven games in which his team, the Calgary Flames, are undefeated. During that streak, the Flames are also 5-2 on the puckline and have moved within striking distance of the Ducks and Oilers in the Pacific Division.
The former 104th overall draft pick was a catalyst for Calgary’s success ever since he entered the league in 2013 and also the path to victory will continue to operate through his and Sean Monahan’s growth.
Nashville Predators’ Best LineScoring a combined 32 points in their last seven games, the line of Victor Arvidsson, Ryan Johansen and Filip Forsberg is the hottest in hockey. Nashville has posted 12 OVERs in its last 13 games and it is the Preds’ first line that bettors have to thank for that trend. Forsberg is known for his incredible second halves so provided that novels keep assigning Nashville totals of 5.5, you may keep gambling the OVER.
The Preds have averaged 4.38 goals scored over the course of their past eight games and through a streak of 11 straight OVERs that recently ended, their games were averaging a total of eight per contest.
Captain Serious along with the KanerThese guys are on absolute fire at this time with 42 joint points because the start of February and it has led to the Blackhawks winning 12 of the past 13 games and all their past seven. It is arguable that two forwards are more important to a team’s overall success than Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews and this season has only helped confirm that. Earlier in the year, when Captain Serious was in a dry spell, the’Hawks went 4-9 SU in matches in which Toews did not register a point throughout a 25-game stretch and 8-4 SU in games he did. It is true that he affects the game in several places other than the scoresheet but it’s clear the’Hawks are better if Toews makes an impact at the end.
It’s also of note that over the course of their past 13 games, the Blackhawks have posted 10 OVERs in part as a result of the donations made by Toews and Kane.
Vlad-dad Becoming Sad-VladOn the opposite end of this spectrum, we have the Russian sniper Vladimir Tarasenko. He’s discovered the back of the net just 1 time in the Blues’ last six matches also, coincidentally enough, the Notes are 1-5 SU in those tilts. Tara is St. Louis’ most skilled player by far and if he slacks off, so does the team’s production. This could just be a coincidence but because the Blues dealt Kevin Shattenkirk into the Capitals, Tarasenko has gotten just two shots on net in over 37 minutes of ice time. His current five-game pointless streak matches the longest of his career so I expect him to get the boat turned around soon with the Blues in a tight playoff race. St. Louis has been streaky all season so if you are a believer in trends, it might be time for you to jump on the Notes.
