US Open: Jamie Murray chasing doubles titles at Flushing Meadows

There might be Winners at the US Open.

After a slow start to their partnership Neal Skupski and Jamie Murray are currently forming a formidable team.
By the verge of defeat in the quarter-finals, they jumped from 2-5 at the final set from duo Jack Sock and Jackson Withrow to progress .
“Not saying we needed to win more than those, but for us, to get only the battle and the attempt, the training we have done over the past few months , we obtained our revenge for that,” Murray said.
Murray combined forces with Brit Skupski ahead of this effort, following a decrease in shape with partner Bruno Soares, together with whom he reached no 1 and won two Grand Slam titles.
The Scot confessed at the time that the choice to split with all the Brazilian was his own and”needed to be done”.
The first indications for Skupski and Murray, who had previously played Ken, fought on the grass courts, enduring premature exits at Hertogenbosch and Queendeparting Wimbledon in the first round.
Murray reunited with his brother Andy for the first time since September 2016.
What has followed is an impressive run of results, that has seen the pair reach the semi-finals in three consecutive tournaments – Winston-Salem, Cincinnati and now at Flushing Meadows.
“Clearly it did not go too well onto the grass… we didn’t spend much time following the grass,” Skupski advised the ATP website.
“I played with World Team Tennis for 3 weeks and Jamie played a week with Andy at Washington. And we played with with Montreal collectively, we practised after ahead of the game.
“We went to Cincinnati and we had lots of days to work and practise. We place a lot of stuff together and I believe from then it worked well.
“We have a lot of matches in Cincinnati… we have come into the united states Open with a lot of optimism and we’re at the semi-finals now and we have got to just take it one game at a time.”
Skupski and murray will play with Wimbledon champions Juan Sebastian Cabal and seeds along with Robert Farah on Thursday .
But this isn’t the success Murray, that is one of nine players is enjoying in New York that this fortnight.
The 33-year-old won two matches to reach the final of the mixed doubles alongside American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
“We had been on fire,” said Murray, after a straight-sets triumph against third seeds Sam Stosur and Rajeev Ram.
“We did not give them an opportunity, I’m quite happy to be in the final again.”
The championswho needed a wildcard later Mattek-Sands missed almost five months of the season with complications in her right kneewill have to conquer Michael Venus and top seeds Chan Hao-Ching at the final to replicate last year’s name.
Later winning next to Martina Hingis in 2017 victory would mean a consecutive US Open achievement in mixed doubles.
Murray is closing to one men’s doubles Grand Slam title – original since the 2016 US Open – and also a fifth victory in doubles.
Form is temporary, class is permanent.
