Serena Guthrie opens up on how she shares her Netball World Cup reflections and handled of captaining the Vitality Roses on home 18, the pressure.
From July 12 to 21, the Netball World Cup enraptured us all and set a standard for the sport championship, a standard which eclipse and South Africa 2023 will vie to attain.
The Vitality Roses’ build-up into this summer’s World Cup was a much-talked roughly one. The contest was expected and the pressure on the shoulders of the group was considerable after their Commonwealth Games triumph and Quad Series performances.
Guthrie was given the task of leading the 12-player squad and, now over six weeks of England from the completion of the competition, the participant is taking inventory of the 10 days.
“It still feels like a bit of a surreal adventure, the World Cup, due to how incredible it was,” reflected Guthrie around July’s tournament in Liverpool.
“To be able to stand up on a podium in the conclusion of everything was this intense tournament for us [was unbelievable ], especially after dropping Layla (Guscoth) and quite much going for 75 per cent of the tournament with 11 players, so that took a large toll on us. The manner that the group got through this and stuck together has been amazing.
“Then you have got the crowds that were just mad, we felt like rock stars for 2 weeks which was awesome! It had been an incredible experience and it’s still sinking in a whole lot.”
Then-head coach Tracey Neville announced guthrie on May 23. At the time, the way in which the mid-court player headed the Roses was commended by Neville.
“After she entered our programme in July she brought a new level. She introduced a job that we didn’t have, she brought a leadership,” commented Neville on squad-announcement day.
“She educated , off and around the courtroom, and she headed with her own performance. She takes our programme forward, she talks out and sweats world class.
“She was flabbergasted [when I told her she had been captain] and I believe the phone call to her was quite emotional. Because it probably was not something which she was anticipating, I got honestly about it.
“With Serena, she probably underestimates herself more than anyone else. In our eyes she’s a world-class participant. She is a gorgeous man and so valuable as a group member”
The Netball World Cup itself saw the home side handle substantial hardship, along with Layla Guscoth’s tournament-ending injury, the devastation of a loss to New Zealand trim heavy.
Prior to the championship the Roses was clear about their target – being at the World Cup final in order to really have a possibility of accepting glory – and – failing to do this hurt them tremendously.
However, the facet as a whole and Guthrie as captain, showed enormous mental and fortitude resilience to come back and dominate South Africa over the last day to take bronze.
“It was probably the most extreme netball experience that I’ve had, but at a really positive way,” Guthrie said.
“I asked myself quite a few questions going into the championship in terms of how I was going to attempt to handle everything and that which my approach was likely to be. It’s reasonable to say I wished to try and stay as true to Serena as I could be and just have a good deal of fun along the way.
“It had been ensuring I was really comfortable in who I was as a individual and that definitely let me direct through this kind of intense experience. It was a good; it turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience also.”
The 2019 Netball World Cup, this tournament’s edition, was hailed as one that continued to place netball in England, both around the map and across the world and an amazing showcase for the game.
We were enraptured by nations such as Zimbabwe along with their play on court and also the support they received from their fans from the stands.
The eventual champions the 10 times Guthrie believes New Zealand astounded by using their bounce and, general has further enhanced the sport’s foundations .
“I think we had a competition like that to show the UK and England exactly what netball is about,” she explained.
“It wasn’t just about England Netball that championship, it had been about showcasing netball along with also the best athletes on the planet, coming together and playing their manner of netball into the top of the ability.
“I think that everyone did this and it felt like a enormous party of game and of girls in sport also.
“We have been moving slowly and gradually improving with respect to the game over the previous couple of years but I think that the World Cup will help hasten the evolution of netball and hopefully the development of the Superleague also.
“The leagues now have to acquire better so we can have more women training and hopefully experiencing what we did in the World Cup.”
For Guthrie the time because the World Cup was action-packed. She has flown head into a wealth of items that were different when it comes to her private life and has settled.
“It’s been enjoyable. To return from an experience at the World Cup to Bob [Guthrie ] also and opening his cafe up attempting to renovate a house from top to base, has been intriguing!
“However, I don’t know life any other way than at a thousand miles an hour, so it didn’t really feel too much from your home! It has been a really fun summertime.”
Netball will go back into Sky Sports together with the British Fast5 All Stars Championship and we are going to continue to hear from players regarding their own routes ahead and everything that may entail as summer starts to turn into autumn.
For now, the World Cup’s memories remain firmly within our heads and Guthrie will continue to allow such a tournament sink .
