Langer was a crucial part of the Dolphins’ 1972 team who went an entire season undefeated and is seen as one of the centers in NFL history.
Hall of Fame member and the two-time Super Bowl winner died on Thursday, the Dolphins stated.
“His contributions to this match will live eternally,” Hall of Fame president David Baker said.
Langer appeared in 128 games for the Dolphins like the Super Bowl victories of 1972 and 1973, in 1970 to 1979.
“He had been the greatest team-mate,” Baker added.
Langer lately gave an interview with BBC Sport about his exploits in that formidable 1972 outfit, speaking of it as”a very special team. It became a family”.
He also spoke of his loss in the death of 2 of his team-mates from Nick Buoniconti, Bob Kuechenberg and that age, who both died earlier this season.
Langer ended his career with home country team Minnesota Vikings. “All our thoughts are with Jim Langer’s family and friends in this tricky time,” the franchise said.
“We’ve lost one of our greatest,” said South Dakota State University, for whom Langer surfaced prior to graduating and joining the Dolphins.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, along with four kids.
