Ashes 2019: James Anderson hungry to keep playing as he sets sights on return for winter tours

James Anderson is”hungry” to keep playing cricket for England because he plans a return to the squad for their winter trips of New Zealand and South Africa with the seamer fighting to return to full fitness from his ongoing calf injury.
The injury was suffered by the all-time leading Evaluation wicket-taker of england when playing the in County Championship for Lancashire and even though he was still fit to play in Edgbaston in the Ashes opener, before suffering a reoccurrence of their injury, he managed to bowl only four overs.
Anderson stepped up his recovery from playing with his county’s second XI side in the lead up to the Test in his Old Trafford but managed as he was ruled out for the series to fully overcome the calf injury.
“I am only about getting over the disappointment on being able to play a role in this show and awaiting what I could do in the future,” Anderson told Sky Sports.
“I am definitely hungry and eager to keep playing for England. I have been bowling and I ever have, I bowled a lot for Lancashire in the start of the year and was in very good shape until I got injured at an moment.
“I never enjoy looking too far ahead, I just want to get my elbows sorted and seem to the next show to determine if I could get myself match for New Zealand and if not, then South Africa.
“Who knows how long I can play , as long as I will keep myself fit and maintain bowling well then I wish to keep playing as much as possible.”
Meanwhile, over whether Joe Root must stay as England captain speculation surfaced following the 185-run triumph of Australia watched them keep the Ashes.
However, Anderson ignored the thoughts of substituting Root, insisting the batsman has the power once a brand new head coach is made to push on the side.
“I think Joe is the right man for the job,” Anderson explained. “He has worked hard to drive this team in the ideal direction over the last few years.
“That has been difficult with changes in personnel in the team, such as Alastair Cook retiring, and trying to find the correct balance of staff to go forward but I think he has done a great job.
“The key with this Exam aspect for Joe Root along with the coach which replaces Trevor Bayliss is that they have exactly the same vision for the team and compels them in the perfect direction.”
See day one of the fifth and final Test live from 10am on Thursday on Sky Sports The Ashes, September 12.
