Richard Hannon’s 2000 Guineas runner-up King Of Change returned by a Prolonged absence to Acquire the Chasemore Farm Fortune Stakes.
While many might have been tempted to strike while the iron was hot with King Of Change (11-4), who was sent off in 66-1 for its Classic, Hannon took the individual approach.
He was keen to give lots time to Farhh’s son to get those exertions as Sean Levey seemed confident, riding him out to conquer favorite Turgenev by a period and a quarter after a large career and his decision was rewarded.
King Of Change is entered on Champions Day at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and was cut from 20s to 12-1 by Paddy Power.
“We are happy, he has been working really well and it is great to see him run a huge race,” said Hannon.
“He will have needed that, he has been off a while so it was pleasing.
“He has a few nice entries and they are all possibilities right now. He will appreciate a bit of give in the ground and next year will probably be his year.
“We have a fresh horse to venture in the autumn with. It was fine for him to demonstrate that the Guineas second was not a fluke.”
Palace Pier remained unbeaten, as his chances of 1-8 suggested he must, at the Max Patel Wealth Manager.
Frankie Dettori wished to keep things easy on John Gosden’s colt and while Mars Landing threatened to make a rush of it, Palace Pier pulled four and a half lengths clear.
Dettori told TV:”He had been lively today. Then I needed to create the running and he was glancing around in the stalls and that he looked at everything, but that’s why we brought him here – for experience.
“We did not want to throw him in at the deep end yet, but he’s learnt some more today and he can be better next time.
“He’s a great horse right now, but when he’s special, I do not understand yet. That which is in the right location, but he’s still a work in progress.”
Dettori and Gosden afterwards made it a treble when Magical Rhythms (5-2 favourite) got going late to win at the Stelrad Radiator Group Fillies’ Handicap and Sucellus (100-30) was a narrow winner of this Christmas Parties At Sandown Park Handicap.
Following he made a winning debut from the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes oisin Murphy spoke quite highly of Via De Vega.
Via De Vega began to fly on meeting the ground, although second looked the best Andrew Balding’s newcomer could expect for Never Alone kicked apparent.
The shot poked in front to win by a mind and gained with each stride.
“The boss really liked him at home. I hadn’t sat on him today, but it was about a wonderful education so it’s brilliant that he had been great enough to win,” said Murphy.
“He jumped a bit slow and I was just attempting to educate him. At the bottom of the right, I didn’t feel so that I do my best I could acquire, but that I wasn’t likely to offer him a hard time.
“He picked up very well all of the way to the line and I suppose it had been an eyecatching performance. I’m very enthusiastic about him. All these are the horses that force you to escape bed in the morning”
