Ereck Flowers bottomed out as an offensive tackle so that the Washington Redskins will try him out as a starting guard.
After being selected No. 9 total in 2015, Flowers struggled mightily as a left tackle with the New York Giants, grading as one of the worst blockers in the whole league. Big Blue tried to move him right tackle last year before eventually giving up and cutting him after five games and just two begins. Flowers started seven matches and developed with the injury-ravaged Jacksonville Jaguars. The turnstile was not improved by the change of scenery.
Redskins assistant head coach Bill Callahan, who also coaches the offensive line, stated during minicamp that Washington plans to begin Flowers at left guard, where he believes the former bust can flourish.

“I see a great deal of potential when we’ve moved tackles indoors,” Callahan said, noting former backup lineman Ty Nsekhe’s occasional movements to guard for instance, via the Washington Post.
Callahan has got the benefit of the doubt as one of the greatest O-line coaches in the NFL over the years, but turning a busted tackle to a guard is easier said than done. It requires a skillset and vigor.
Callahan believes Flowers projects just fine for the move.
“I think it provides us size, it gives us power, I believe these are really good traits for your running attack and pass protection,” Callahan continued. “He’s long, he’s square, obviously he can play in the short area so those are things we kind of identified during free agency that we liked and we’re attempting to match him into that mode. So it has been a work in progress, we have a long ways to go yet, but he’s made a nice transition.”
The movement to guard didn’t get much testing throughout the spring offseason program. With Trent Williams hanging out and copy Geron Christian recovering from knee surgery, Flowers had to spend extra time filling in tackle. If Williams reports to training camp, but the plan would be to slide Flower to left guard and expect Callahan can work his magic.
