Devin Toner has been made from Ireland’s 31-man group to the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
The Leinster lock was a regular under head coach Joe Schmidt, starting 50 of the Kiwi’s 67 Exam games in charge.
With Ulster back Will Addison likewise not contained in the selection munster’s South Africa-born Jean Kleyn was given the nod ahead of Toner.
Schmidt was not anticipated to name his group.
The side play their closing warm-up match at Dublin on Saturday against Wales, with their World Cup Pool A match coming on 22 September.
Three Ulster players, second row Iain Henderson captain Rory Best and wing Jacob Stockdale, are in the squad while missing out along with Addison are brand new registering Jack McGrath and Jordi Murphy.
Kleyn only qualified for Ireland on residency two days prior to his Test debut, the 29-10 victory over Italy on August 10, however, the 26-year-old edged out Toner, that featured in each of three World Cup warm-up games.
“I have coached Dev for 10 years, he is not merely our line-out winner but he is such a great player, and he is an absolutely quality individual. That was a remarkably challenging talk yesterday,” said Schmidt.
“Jean Kleyn – we probably don’t have a specialist tight-head next row as such and I believe we’re searching for that balance. Tadhg Beirne gives us that versatility this season and he’s teamed up at Munster well with Kleyn.
“He offers you the danger on the ball such as a 6 or 7 would and may play in the back row. We’ve got James Ryan who has made an opinion.
“Iain Henderson has promised so much and done incredibly well for us occasionally. We are going to need one to put his very best foot forward so that it was a really tight conclusion around Dev too.”
Connacht scrum-half Kieran Marmion has been left with Schmidt although Chris Farrell gets the nod as a flexible back before Addison heading as Conor Murray’s backup with Luke McGrath.
“It was a tough thing right from the start to have the 45 that we had,” added Schmidt.
“We went to 40 players and to go from 40 back to 31 was very hard, but we had a process where we looked back through every training, looked through the matches.
“There were several guys who clearly needed more experience and probably had more credit in the bank and so were more established.
“And there have been other guys who were hoping to force their way to the group and seeking to obtain a balance of current form versus previous operation. It is always a really very difficult conundrum to attempt to address.”
