(CNN) — Major League Baseball allegedly has cautioned its players that over-the-counter sexual supplements may contain prohibited ingredients that would result in failed performance enhancing drugs tests.
ESPN obtained a memo delivered for the 30 clubs by the league officer.
The memo states in part thatthe goods are usually contaminated with banned and harmful components, ESPN documented.
CNN asked the Major League Baseball Players Association and Major League Baseball for a copy of the memo. The team said it does not create memos.
The use of sexual performance enhancement tablets — generally found at convenience stores — is more prevalent among baseball players, ESPN reported citing unnamed sources.
The US Food and Drug Administration has cautioned that the public in the past about using penile enhancement solutions that were non-regulated.
Donald D. Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance at the FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, told CNN last year thatthe FDA was combating the retail sale of male enhancement drug products that are often misrepresented as dietary supplements and that contain hidden and potentially dangerous active drug ingredients.
