Sepp Kuss won point 15 in the Vuelta a Espana on a day for his team that was Jumbo-Visma and pioneer Primoz Roglic.
Kuss maintained victory with a potent display on the 154.4km ride from Tineo into Santuario del Acebo.
The American, 24, grabbed the summit end 39 seconds clear of Ruben Guerreiro of both Portugal and British riders Tao Geoghegan Hart.
Roglic put time except Alejandro Valverde on all of his nearest rivals.
It was a Grand Tour stage success for rider Kuss and he celebrated using high-fives with spectators on the approach.
Valverde, roared on by his home fans, launched an assault at the hills in northern Spain, which fell each of the principal challengers .
The Slovenian keeps the leader’s red jersey Valverde in second.
Stage 16 is another day in the hills with a 144.4km ride on Monday by Pravia into Alto de la Cubilla.
