Nemanja Matic says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to hold himself responsible if Manchester United do not compete to the Premier League title.
Matic, who arrived at 2017 at Old Trafford from Chelsea, has played only 22 minutes this year after making a appearance as a substitute against Southampton.
United, who won the team title in 2013, are in the table after four matches and path league leaders Liverpool by seven things.
“The coach must opt for the team who will fight for the name and when he does not win, he bears the duty,” Matic told reporters ahead of Serbia’s European Qualifier from Portugal on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Premier League.
“I have been in football for quite a long time, I’ve played almost all the games for all of the clubs in the previous ten years. In order for me to perform, one had to sit the bench and take that fact, so do I now.”
Solskjaer has chosen 22-year-old Scott McTominay to partner Paul Pogba in midfield in the first four games of United and he is determined to show the erroneous although Matic respects the decision.
“At the first two or three games he chose the group without me,” Matic added. “I work as hard as I can. We respect the decision, it’s up to me to put me back to where I really belong and to reveal that he had been wrong.
“There is not any problem. He told him I disagreed with him but that he needed to decide the team.”
United return to league action after the global break when they host Brendan Rodgers’ unbeaten Leicester at Old Trafford.
Paul Scholes does not believe the side of Solskjaer may compete for the Premier League title in the subsequent two decades.
The ex-United along with England midfielder believes results this year reveal they remain behind last season’s top four.
He explained:”I think you almost have to compose United off to the next two years this group – until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has rid what he wants out; has four or five transfer windows.”
