After years of speculation and preparation, the Phillies have landed their superstar.
It took until the final day of February, but the Phils and 26-year-old Bryce Harper have agreed to some 13-year deal worth $330 million, a source tells NBC Sports Philadelphia Phillies insider Jim Salisbury.
Manny Machado functioned as the pace car, agreeing on Feb. 19 to a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres. At one point in the offseason, it seemed that the Phils prioritized Machado, but that valuation was too large for his or her liking. Harper will probably be better for business, which likely factored into the price tag and attracts more of an entertainment factor than Machado. In certain ways, Harper can also be a better fit since power is added by him.
In the days leading up with Harper to the Phillies’ agreement, he had been connected to their ability to contend immediately and the Dodgers, a scary suitor because of their deep pockets, proximity to the Las Vegas home of Harper. But money talks along with the Phillies’ offer was the wealthiest.
