Egypt has been banned from weightlifting World Championships for doping offences – based on state websites – and may be suspended from Tokyo 2020.
Several weightlifters were for the whole world championships, which start on Wednesday in Thailand, but were missing when the start book of the competition was released on Tuesday.
“The banning is for two years and this means that we won’t be able to take part in the Olympics,” Sherif El-Erian, the secretary general of Egypt’s Olympic Committee, advised Al-Ahram newspaper.
The International Wrestling Federation (IWF) hasn’t supported the ban but its principles state any state coming three or more positive tests within a year confronts sanction.
In Cairo, five youngsters, for example two 14-year-old women, failed tests in 2016.
“Once we receive a formal letter about the banwe will do our best to solve the emergency,” added El-Erian.
The World Championships will be the most important qualifying event for Tokyo 2020.
Rio 2016 bronze medallists Mohamed Ehab and Sara Ahmed were set to be the strongest medal contenders in Tokyo of their nation.
