India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked the British government to intervene within the elimination of shooting against the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
India won seven gold medals from the game in the 2018 Games.
But it has been excluded from the Games.
In an letter into Nicky Morgan, he wrote:”The public takes keen interest .”
His correspondence with the secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport also noted that India makes up over half 2.4 billion people of the 53-nation Commonwealth.
While he also added that”the global Mobility Federation [ISSF] has given to discuss the fee for inclusion of shooting in Birmingham.
“It seems the choice to exclude shooting relies on the grounds that shooting had never been a sport that is compulsory and there is not any venue available for holding shooting events.”
Shooting was included in each Games apart from one because 1966 (Edinburgh from 1970), but is not among their occasion’s’core sports’.
Shooting – along with beach volleyball, archery, cricket and Para-table golfing – expressed its desire.
An evaluation panel comprised of representatives from authorities, as well as the organising committee and Commonwealth England of Birmingham 2022, was setup to assess each game’s case.
However, in June, Birmingham 2022 declared that beach volleyball, Para-table tennis and women’s cricket had been successful.
The move has proved controversial, if the sport is not reinstated, together with India threatening to boycott the event.
India topped the desk for shooting at the 2018 Games in Australia, asserting 16 medals.
