Liverpool have the Advantage over Manchester City in the Premier League title race, Based on Graeme Souness.
Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have won five out of five in the league, also opened a five-point gap to protecting champions Manchester City during the weekend after Pep Guardiola’s side fell to a surprise 3-2 defeat.
Aymeric Laporte’s absence, that faces up to six months out, has already proven pricey with Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones both fighting in the loss to Norwich.
When asked if Laporte’s lack gives Liverpool the border in the title race, Souness told Sky Sports News:”I think so. Together with Laporte’s harm I thought City could find it hard from the better teams. With all due respect to Norwich, they did some on these.
“I believed they would get by in most games but against better teams they’d find it difficult to defend and get trapped out.
It’s not a huge advantage, you need to remember that we are nevertheless in September but blood has gone to Liverpool. They have momentum and no one is asking some questions of these while all eyes are on City.”
Souness also believes that the execution culture instilled by Klopp at Anfield is bringing the best from Liverpool’s players.
“They are a team I don’t think anyone enjoys playing against because they are competitive and they try every part of the game with the physicality and technique all of them have,” he further added.
“They behave as a team. It is unusual in today’s game if they aren’t at it however they have players who are prepared to point fingers. This makes them very strong.
“They are the group that no one enjoys playing against, individuals will say that around City in another way. You’ve got to be at your very best against them.”
Stones should be given a opportunity to have an protracted streak in Guardiola’s starting line-up by the lack of laporte.
Souness believes that the England international has got the capacity to be among the top defenders in Europe when he can improve his decision making.
“[City] need to hope Stones and Otamendi can form a venture.
“I believe Stones is only missing something, whether it’s his decision? He has the potential to be the very best, better than most of them besides [Virgil] van Dijk.
“He wants to receive his decision spot on, if he gets that City could have one of the best centre-halves from the nation, possibly outside the country.”
Graeme Souness was talking on behalf of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK during the annual Bobby Moore Charity Golf Day. The proceeds are spent on dedicated bowel cancer research from Cancer Research UK.
