Liverpool have the Advantage over Manchester City in the Premier League title race, Based on Graeme Souness.
Opened a five-point gap into defending champions Manchester City over the weekend after Pep Guardiola’s side fell to a surprise 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday.
Not having Aymeric Laporte, who faces up to six months out, has proven costly with Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones both fighting .
If asked when Laporte’s lack gives Liverpool the edge in the title race, then Souness told Sky Sports News:”I believe so. With the harm of Laporte I believed City would find it difficult against the better teams. Over the weekend, they did a number on these with all due respect to Norwich.
“I thought they’d get in many games but against better teams they’d find it difficult to shield and get trapped out.
It is not a significant advantage, you have to keep in mind that we are nevertheless in September but blood has gone to Liverpool. They have momentum and nobody is asking some questions of these all eyes are on City.”
Souness also believes the performance culture is attracting the very best out of the players of Liverpool.
“They’re a group I do not think anybody enjoys playing against because they are competitive and they test every component of the game with the physicality and technique all of them have,” he further added.
“They play as a team. It is unusual in today’s game however they have players who are willing to point fingers if they are not at it. That makes them.
“They are the team that nobody likes playing against, folks will say that around City in a different way. You have to be at your best against them.”
Stones should be given a chance to have an extended run in Guardiola by laporte’s lack.
Souness believes the England international has the potential to be among the top defenders in Europe if he may improve his decision making.
“[City] have to hope Stones and Otamendi can form a partnership.
“I think Stones is just overlooking something, while it is his decision? He has the potential to be the best, better than all of them besides [Virgil] van Dijk.
“He wants to get his decision-making spot on, if he gets that City could have among the greatest centre-halves from the country, possibly beyond the nation.”
