He is on his way to a photoshoot at Amsterdam If the phone is answered by Royston Drenthe. It’s for an underwear business, and will comprise former footballers. “I don’t have a six-pack however they still want me,” he yells.
Real Madrid, the former Feyenoord and Everton winger has been willing to try new things. For such a colourful personality, that has explored interests in poker, fashion, perfume and music, nothing should come as surprise.
At 32, Drenthe is looking with for Kozakken Boys in the third grade of Dutch football. He was perhaps the very hunted prospect in Europe, although the world, but his career didn’t quite go to plan up in age 29.
“The two years that I stopped I needed something fresh,” states Drenthe. “I only needed to step out for a little to find myself .”
Throughout the summer of 2007, Drenthe was hailed as the Netherlands’ celebrity with led his nation to victory from the European Under-21s Championship, in addition to claiming the award for the best player of the tournament.
Famous figures such as Andrea Pirlo, Luis Figo and Fabio Cannavaro had previously won the award.
“It was an amazing feeling. At the European philosopher everything was going well and when nightclubs begin requesting you it’s just like a dream come true. I had to make a choice about which I needed to perform.
“You will find large clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona. It was not an easy choice to make but that I picked Real Madrid since my step-dad was always a big fan of them.”
Drenthe was just 20, with one year in football supporting himwhen he transferred into arguably the world team for euros.
“You must take some chances immediately. A whole great deal of folks would say,’it had been too premature for him. Why did he leave Feyenoord?’ That is football. You make decisions to triumph but sometimes they do not go the way you desire,” he states.
“I felt at home straight away since the players were very good for me and they assisted me. They were enormous stars but they treated me as a regular boy.”
Drenthe tended towards the magnificent. He scored on his debut with a long-range strike that was thumping and featured regularly in his first season, initially keeping Marcelo. He won the name but fell out of favour.
In a famously demanding club, whose fans had the expectations, Drenthe came. Anxiety was induced by the strain.
“I was a young lad who arrived to a major team , playing in front of 90,000 people every home game,” he describes.
“There came a moment where I had a issue but the folks around me spoke to me and helped me in the right direction”
Loaned out following a third season in Madrid to Hercules, strife and doubt accompanyed advancement on the pitch off it.
“It was really good but also very poor. It turned out to be a time for your club although I had a fantastic time there. They were not paying wages and that sort of stuff,” he states.
“At that moment it wasn’t straightforward. I was just like,’When they don’t pay wages, I’m not coming to training’.”
Drenthe went on strike, and found herself a goal for the fans’ frustration as a result.
Another loan spell at Everton turned sour when David Moyes ostracised him amid rumours of indiscipline and a lifestyle that was wayward.
“Sometimes things happen and I got punished for the things which I did. It is like seven decades ago today. Some of those things I did, so I do know I did .
“I always focused on soccer. You guys believe that I didn’t but I always did. In order that they obtain their own opinion, Many folks see things and see things. But they don’t understand me. It doesn’t bother me.”
Drenthe had a reputation as a celebration and playboy animal throughout his career. Rightly or wrongly, the general perception has suffered as his priorities have changed. It does not tally with how he sees .
“I like to help people. I’m open. I am a family man. I Royston, you understand? I move with the flow.”
Drenthe spent a Couple of weeks in Russia at Alania Vladikavkaz prior to returning to England together with Reading and then Sheffield Wednesday, before charms at Turkey and the UAE.
After more issues with wages and brokers Drenthe, disillusioned, retired in 2016 nine years .
“I was making music but it’s difficult to say I was focused on one thing. I was busy with lots of different items,” he says.
“I have always enjoyed music. When I’m happy I listen to music and when I am sad I listen to songs. It always gives me a great feeling.”
Aside from rapping as Roya2Faces, there was a clothes store a company, a perfume store and his six kids to keep him busy.
Then that he received an offer the director of Sparta Rotterdam, Henk Fraser, to give another move to football.
And now Drentheand Kozakken Boys at the tier in front of crowds of a few thousand’s playing along with his cousin. He’s happy to be enjoying although it is not the Bernabeu.
Drenthe himself doesn’t share it, although for observers, bewitched with his own skills as a youngster, there will always be a lingering sense of what might happen to be.
“No regrets in any respect. This happens for a reason,” he states. “I do not regret anything because I’m happy with where I am and I’m pleased with where I have been. I am living my life right now.”
